On April 19-22 OPSEU held their annual convention at the Sheridan Center in
Toronto. Thankfully, our local held elections in time to send three Delegates
and three Alternatives to our first convention.
Upon arrival on April 19th we attended our first Caucus Meeting held for the
Liquor Board Employee's Division as well as a New Delegates Caucus
Meeting. We were bombarded with
"Roberts Rules of Order" and countless
literature to prepare us for what was to come the following day on the
convention floor.
Day 1
OPSEU President Leah Casselman opened the 2006 Annual Convention by
welcoming the 1400 delegates and members attending the largest convention
in OPSEU history. After pointing out some key issues involving different
sectors, Leah dedicated the 2006 Convention to
John Stammers.
We started with the Treasurer's Report and the Budget. After lengthy debate,
the budget was referred back to the Board for discussion, and  amendment.
On March 13, 2006, at the Progress Campus of Centennial College, John
Stammers
, an accounting professor, was struck by a car while participating
legal strike action of college staff. Five days later, John died from the injuries
he sustained on the picket line. He gave his time and support to his students,
colleagues and fellow members of Local 558. John was known to be a
dedicated teacher, a loving husband, father and friend.
Day 2
The day opened with more debate on the budget and a report from the
Executive Board regarding the Budget meeting last night. The constitutional
amendment was presented to the delegates late Friday morning and passed.
After lunch
David Suzuki won the audience and Stanley Knowles Award. Some
key Resolutions that were passed:
-
OPSEU to fight for the O.H.R.C.
-Fight for successor rights.
-OPSEU Goes Green.
-NDP affiliation narrowly defeated.
-Six Nations get support.
Day 3
Taylor and Spencer McBride started "Lisa's Beads" in memory of their 2003.
Through sales at OPSEU Convention 2006, "Lisa's Beads" raised 2003.
Through sales at OPSEU Convention 2006, "Lisa's Beads" raised $3,005.
This amount has been matched by OPSEU for a total of $6,010 to be used
towards the fight against cancer.used towards the fight against cancer.
Welcome to OPSEU
Local 5107's site.
Dedicated to informing
and educating our
"new" local within
OPSEU. One of the
prime reasons the
Local Executive
decided to start a
website was to
encourage
"Information Sharing".
This being said, we
are still in the
beginning stages of
development and
hope to have much
more information
available through our
site in the coming
months. Please have
a look around, as any
suggestions and/or
recommendations are
greatly appreciated.

In solidarity,
